Recent Grant Recipients

Through its grant making, the Windham Foundation seeks to assist Vermont nonprofit organizations concerned with the needs and quality of life in Vermont, its citizens and its communities. These organizations include, but are not limited to, those dealing with agriculture & the food systems, disadvantaged youth, environmental enhancement, education in the broadest sense, public policy issues, promotion of the arts, crafts & Vermont traditions, meeting basic human services and historic preservation.

Fall 2009

Bennington Museum, Inc., Bennington

Funding to support the "State of Craft: The Contemporary Craft Movement in Vermont, 1960-2010."

Brattleboro Music Center, Inc., Brattleboro

Funding to support the Brattleboro Music Center's $3.5 Million "Music Moves" capital campaign.

COVER Home Repair, Inc., White River Junction

Funding for an Educational Outreach Program through COVER Home Repair and the ReCover Store.  This program will offer classes/workshops on basic home repair, maintenance, and remodeling using recycled materials, to our homeowner clients, most of whom are low-income, as well as to ReCover Store customers and to the general public.

 

Epilepsy Foundation of Vermont, Rutland

The special grant is in memory of Larraine Zuccaro Berube.

 

Green Mountain College, Poultney

Funding to support researching the integration of solar thermal (hot water) systems into high tunnel vegetable production systems and sharing the results with farmers in Vermont and the Northeast.

 

Hogback Mountain Conservation Association, BrattleboroFunding to play a large role in closing the capital campaign gap to acquire and conserve 593 acres of land in Marlboro, VT.  The land will be conserved with easements and open for public access.

Making the Most of I, Inc., Saxtons River

Funding is for support to enable Making the Most of I to provide a free of charge 14 week course for disenfranchised women in the Windsor, VT area.  Focus is on mental health, stress reductions, communication, as well as accessing support and resources. 

Morningside House Inc., Brattleboro

Funding to support an addition to Morningside Shelter that would result in two new family-sized bedrooms, an improved food pantry and laundry area, additional common space, and increased energy efficiency of the entire facility.

Southern Vermont Area Health Ed Center/30 + 5 Program, Springfield

Funding to provide four traveling cooking carts equipped with cooking necessities to four elementary schools serving Bellows Falls and Springfield, VT.  These carts will become the property of each school and shared among the classrooms.  Using these carts 30 + 5 staff will train approximately 36 classroom teachers with integrating cooking and the curriculum.

Vermont Center for the Book, Chester

Funding to support the Red Clover Award Program, which helps K-4 educators enrich standards-based reading/writing experiences in grades K-4.

Vermont Symphony Orchestra Inc., Burlington

Funding to help bring professional VSO ensembles into schools for interactive educational programs that introduce the orchestral instruments and explore classical music.  Over 3 years, the VSO will reach every elementary school in Windham and Southern Windsor counties (30 schools, 4000 kids).

Vermont Youth Orchestra Association, Colchester

Funding to support their transition to a new Music Director.  The VYOA learned in April, 2009 that their Music Director of 14 years, Troy Peters, accepted a position with the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio. He was with them through the end of July and they have hired interim conductors Asiat Ali and Andrew Massey for the 2009-2010 concert season.  They will launch a national search in September, 2009 with a goal of filling the Music Director position by February, 2010.  Support from the Windham Foundation will ensure that we have the resources to conduct a thorough search and continue our quality programming for over 600 young Vermont musicians.
